Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Starring: James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy
My Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Synopsis: Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities, and must try and escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.
My Thoughts: While the movie had its issues, I was enjoying it until the end. Without spoiling anything, Split ended up being somewhat of a sequel (which I was unaware of until I came out of the movie). I WAS SO CONFUSED AT THE END and this completely ruined everything. After leaving the theater, I had to get on Wikipedia to figure out what had just happened. After doing my research, I was just angry that the director had the gull to make assumptions and didn't spread his message to the media.
With that being said, this movie was creepy and absolutely messes with your mind. You will be kept guessing and wondering throughout its entirety. The movie's leading man, Jame McAvoy, did a fantastic job portraying a man with multiple personalities. There were times in this movie where the distinction between his portrayals were so clear. However, there were other times where the lines between the personalities were very intentionally blurred. As for my negatives... the flashbacks seemed pointless and the portrayal of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) didn't always feel true. Overall, I would recommend this movie as something you would pick up on DVD for a movie night. I would not waste money going to the theater to watch it though. I would also consider watching the "1st" movie (I will say what movie that is in the spoiler section below if you would like to know), so you have the context going into Split.
