Dirty Dancing - TV Review

Network: ABC

Genre: Drama, Musical

Director: Wayne Blair

Starring: Abigail Breslin, Colt Prattes, Nicole Scherzinger

Synopsis: The film is set in the summer of 1963 and centers on Baby, an innocent young woman who vacations with her affluent parents at a Catskill Mountains resort and gets swept off her feet by Johnny, a handsome, working-class dance instructor.

My Rating:  ★★☆☆☆

My Thoughts: This TV movie event was... a trainwreck. It wasn't totally unwatchable, but it was very hard to get through. It was about a half hour too long, the casting was strange with very little chemistry between the actors, and the music seemed out of place at times. The original Dirty Dancing, starring the charming Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, is a classic by most people's standards. It was full of iconic lines, songs, and dance sequences. While this movie tried to mimic those same iconic moments, I spent most of my time laughing at how ridiculously hard the actors were trying in this remake. And did I mention the lack of chemistry or sexual tension? Some scenes were hard to swallow because of how awkward Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes were together. I would not buy their blooming relationship in any alternate universe. On top of all that was wrong already, was the strange attempt to make this movie into a musical. I know that TV musical adaptations are all the rage right now (and I am not complaining about this one bit), but Dirty Dancing was never a musical to begin with. The badly auto-tuned musical numbers completely took me out of the movie every time.

Overall, my recommendation would be to skip this "original event". It is not worth the 2 and a half hours that it took me to watch it. I felt compelled to watch this remake because of my love for TV musicals and the original Dirty Dancing movie, but it did not even meet my already low expectations. Treat yourself and go watch the original!!
