The Defenders - Season 1 Review

Network: Netflix

Genre: Action, Superhero

My Rating: ★★★☆

Synopsis: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist team up to fight crime in New York City.

My Thoughts: Who else has been waiting for this street-level superhero team-up for two and a half years?!? I certainly have and did it live up to my high expectations? Unfortunately not. There was so much potential with this show. The four stars had (mostly) successful individual outings, they somehow managed to snag Sigourney Weaver as their villain, and the show came in at eight episodes allowing zero room for filler episodes. Essentially, where was there room to lose?

Was The Defenders bad? No, no, no... it was not by any means a bad show. It was fun, action packed, and the four main characters (Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand) actually had great chemistry together. I personally found Danny to be naive and slightly annoying in Iron Fist, as I think most people did. However, he works when surrounded by the other three characters. He becomes a sort of beacon of hope and optimism because Murdock, Jones, and Cage are all so grounded and dark.

However, this show also has a LOT of problems. There are pacing issues, continuity issues, and some MAJOR villain issues (which seems to be the case with most Marvel properties). Sigourney Weaver was SO underutilized. Her acting was superb (as always) and I honestly found her to be quite menacing. There was simply nothing written for her to do. She just walked around in shiny outfits, telling people that she was big stuff. There also weren't any sort of consequences. I know that each character's show has been renewed for new seasons, so it wasn't like we were going to lose one of them, but most of the characters ended up in the same spot by the end of the show as they were at the beginning of the show. You could write a couple minutes worth of scenes to address certain situations (like Luke Cage getting out of prison, for example) and you could jump into the individual shows like The Defenders never happened.

Overall, I am pretty disappointed in The Defenders. I am such a huge Marvel junkie and I will follow their adaptations until the day I die (or they run out of ideas and stop making them). However, I am not enjoying the direction they seem to be going with their TV shows. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the first 2/3 of Luke Cage were pretty amazing... Iron Fist and The Defenders were not. I am also very scared about how Inhumans looks, but that is a story for another day. I hope things turn around soon for these Netflix shows. I have faith that they can, as most of the Marvel movies have been great and I know they can produce quality entertainment. Unfortunately for now, we will just have to cross out fingers and be patient.
