The Little French Bistro by Nina George - Book Review

Genre: Fiction

My Rating: ★★☆☆

Synopsis: Marianne is stuck in a loveless, unhappy marriage. After forty-one years, she has reached her limit, and one evening in Paris she decides to take action. Following a dramatic moment on the banks of the Seine, Marianne leaves her life behind and sets out for the coast of Brittany, also known as the end of the world. Here she meets a cast of colorful and unforgettable locals who surprise her with their warm welcome, and the natural ease they all seem to have, taking pleasure in life s small moments. And, as the parts of herself she had long forgotten return to her in this new world, Marianne learns it s never too late to begin the search for what life should have been all along.

My Thoughts: What I wanted out of this book was something sweet and atmospheric. I thought it was going to be something more in the vein of Nina George's other book, The Little Paris Bookshop. I found that book to be warm and, ultimately, happy. This is not what I got out of The Little French Bistro, but some of my disappointment is due to my high expectations.

I really struggled to get through this book. It was depressing, flat, and kind of boring. I found myself forcing my way through so I could write this review to the best of my ability. Unfortunately, I just don't have very many good things to say. The prose is beautiful and flowery... and that's about it. I didn't connect with any of the characters and the book did not transport me to an afternoon in France (which is what I REALLY wanted). Overall, I personally cannot recommend this book. I do think that there is an audience that could enjoy this book, and maybe in a different mind-set I could too. As I did enjoy The Little Paris Bookshop, I will still consider reading any future books by Nina George. This one was just not for me.
