Warcross by Marie Lu - Book Review

Series: Warcross #1

Genre: Y/A, Science Fiction

My Rating: ★★★★

Synopsis: For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation. Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

My Thoughts: Warcross was one of my most anticipated books of the year as Marie Lu is one of my favorite YA authors. I loved her Legend trilogy and I loved the premise of this novel. The synopsis gave me action, virtual reality games, Tokyo, and computer hackers... if the name Marie Lu didn't get me then these buzzwords sure would have. And boy did this book not let me down. I LOVED Warcross so, so much. The pacing was excellent, the twists and turns were well plotted, and the romance (which I was hesitant to read in a book like this) was absolutely swoon-worthy. This book gave me everything and I need the sequel ASAP.

While reading Warcross, I found myself comparing some of the aspects of the book to other books (each of which I would consider to be some of my FAVORITE books of all time). The gaming world gave me Ready Player One vibes and the Warcross championships reminded me of The Hunger Games, both of which I found really added to my reading experience. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the characters. Emika is my hero... she is so brave and stubborn and I loved it. Hideo might just be my new book boyfriend... he is smart and suave without even trying to be. Hell, I even loved each of the supporting characters as even their development was excellently written.

Overall, I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is one of my favorite reads of the year and I cannot look forward to the sequel more. The hyper surrounding this book is everywhere and it could not be more deserved. Everyone... just please read Warcross and support the brilliant Marie Lu!

    1. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I lent it to my mom to read and she is about halfway through and loving it as well (she pretty much reads anything I tell her to ;P).
